Ron Nease and his wife Deborah, started Briarwood Ranch after Ron, who used to be in the automobile sales business, was offered five elk in trade for a car. According to The Citizen Tribune newspaper: "That sounded interesting and since he had the land for the elk, he made the trade. The elk were so much fun to have around he began to collect other species of wildlife."
